Tomates verdes fritos: en el café de Whistle Stop
Capitán Swing
A blend of tradition and freshness, the touching Fried Green Tomatoes is about Evelyn Couch, a middle-aged woman going through depression, and the endearing elderly Ninny Threadgoode. Evelyn lives a gray, insecure, and completely frustrated existence with everything around her. During a visit to the nursing home where her mother-in-law lives, she meets Mrs. Threadgoode, who begins to tell her stories about a small town called Whistle Stop, whose life once revolved around a café. Suddenly, a bright window to the past opens for Evelyn, letting in a breath of fresh air. Going back to the late 1920s, the elderly woman describes Idgie and Ruth, two sensitive, cheerful spirits full of admirable vitality, who know how to overcome difficulties and savor the taste of life. Tenderness and strength are wisely mixed in Ninny’s words, making Idgie and Ruth true heroines of everyday life. Fried Green Tomatoes addresses themes such as discrimination against women, racism, female homosexuality, poverty, and alcoholism, and despite this, it is one of those optimistic novels where, as if by magic, everything fits perfectly. The novel was adapted into a film in 1991.
