The legend says that, while preparing the props for the James Bond film Agent 007 - Live and Let Die, producer Albert Broccoli commissioned the surrealism master Salvador Dalí to create a custom tarot deck. Inspired by his wife Gala, who fueled his interest in mysticism, Dalí enthusiastically set to work and, when the contract fell through, continued the project on his own. The work was published in 1984 as a limited edition art print, long since sold out, making Dalí the first famous painter to create a brand-new deck of cards. Drawing on Western masterpieces from antiquity to the modern era (including some of his own), Dalí seamlessly combined his knowledge of the arcane with his unmistakable sense of humor. The result is a surreal kaleidoscope of European art history. Taschen brings all 78 cards of Dalí’s unique custom deck back to life in this new edition, accompanied by a booklet from the famous German tarot author Johannes Fiebig, which includes an introduction to Dalí’s life and the making of the project; practical advice, meanings, and a thorough explanation of each card’s composition; step-by-step instructions for performing readings; and an accessible approach that simplifies tarot for beginners.
