The long time elapsed since the classical texts were produced until today has caused them to undergo numerous vicissitudes, resulting in deterioration due to the fragility of the materials on which they were written, or alterations, since most of them had to be copied repeatedly to preserve and disseminate them during the period before the invention of the printing press. The task of the editor of classical texts is, therefore, to gather the existing copies of the works, compare them, and try to recover their original state to produce an edition consistent with modern criteria. From the time of Aristarchus to the present, textual criticism has refined its methods and developed a body of doctrine that must be known, even if only briefly, not only to edit texts but also to use critical editions with full understanding. This manual aims to offer an accessible and educational synthesis of the principles and methods of textual criticism and the editing of Greek texts, illustrated with numerous examples. Although focused on Greek texts, it is not only useful for Greek editions but also for other languages, since the principles of textual criticism are largely shared by editions of many types of texts.
