La herencia (DOS BIGOTES)
Editorial Dos Bigotes SL
“A smash hit” (The New York Times); “hardly forgettable” (Variety): 'La herencia' is the most awarded American play of recent times.
Set in New York three decades after the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic and shortly before the 2016 elections that brought Donald Trump to victory, Matthew Lopez’s La herencia presents us with a mosaic of relationships and connections among gay men of different ages and social classes, reflecting on what responsibilities one generation owes to the next.
The author very loosely adapts the novel Howards End by E. M. Forster, making the English writer one of the protagonists of the plot. His work has received unanimous critical acclaim, being considered an instant modern classic.
Directed by Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader), the first theatrical version premiered at the Young Vic Theatre in London in 2018, where The Daily Telegraph called it “the most important American play of the century.” In 2019, it moved to Broadway stages, earning eight Laurence Olivier Award nominations and winning Best New Play, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Lighting Design.
La herencia has won the Drama Desk, Evening Standard, London Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, WhatsOnStage, Southbank Sky Arts, and GLAAD Media awards for best production, becoming the most lauded American play of recent times. Matthew Lopez is also the first playwright of Latino origin to win any of these awards in the Best Play category.
