What do we mean by intersexuality? Are we talking about medical diagnoses, bodies, identities, subjectivities, or politics? Are intersex people those who have at some point been labeled with the name of some “anomaly,” “syndrome,” or “difference” in their sexual development? Are they those whose sexual characteristics at the genetic, hormonal, gonadal, or genital level do not fit into binary schemes? Or those who were surgically intervened so that their bodies conformed to female or male standards? It could be all of these, but also none of them. In two decades, we have gone from this being an invisible issue, confined to the medical field, to it currently becoming an emerging matter at the media, political, and legislative levels. However, visibility has had some side effects: today misinformation on the topic and polarization of positions continue to grow. Therefore, just as nature does not understand one-size-fits-all or dichotomies dyed pink and blue, this essay proposes abandoning simplistic answers, sensationalist headlines, and false dualisms.
