For years I hid behind smiles, extravagant looks, and an entertainer persona I created myself. I came from being a child who learned to take refuge in the Spice Girls, on TV, and in those worlds where being different didn’t seem like a punishment.

This book tells how that persona got out of hand, how I hit rock bottom—including a near-death experience—and how, recently, I’ve begun to forgive myself. Between personal narrative and pop culture phenomena—from Britney Spears to Amy Winehouse—I review obsessive behaviors, bullying, depression, abuses of power, and addictions that are everywhere, to understand what they say about us as a society.
