Buddhism is one of the longest-lasting living religions, with a history spanning more than two millennia. It is currently the fourth largest religion in terms of followers, after Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Although Buddhism is often thought of as an Asian religion, it has experienced significant growth in the last forty years in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Buddhism is also increasingly established in our country. In fact, there are about three hundred Buddhist centers in Spain, gathering around 80,000 practitioners, making it a religious option that required a general synthesis work. This introduction to Buddhism in Spain, which aims to fill that gap, is the first of its kind published and is the result of research based on fieldwork in Buddhist centers and interviews with their leaders and followers. It also reviews the significant Buddhist-inspired bibliographic production published in our country. Additionally, it includes an overview of the history of Buddhism in Spain and a study of its current establishment. The photographic material illustrating the work, taken by the author, seeks to provide elements to highlight the impact of Buddhism in Spain, which is very notable, as our country hosts some of the most remarkable Buddhist monuments, monasteries, and places of worship outside Asia.
