El 1965, Tom of Finland va començar a jugar amb la idea d'un personatge recurrent per a les seves històries en vinyetes, l'home definitiu de Tom. Va provar amb un ros anomenat Vicky—un nom masculí comú a Finlàndia—seguit d'un Jack inspirat en Tarzan. Després, el 1968, Tom es va decidir per Kake, un home de cuir de cabell fosc i bigoti que sovint portava una samarreta blanca ajustada amb el lema "Fucker". Kake va estar a l'altura d'aquest sobrenom, una mena de Johnny Appleseed post-Stonewall, hiper-masculí, viatjant pel món amb la seva motocicleta per escampar les llavors d'un sexe gai alliberat, mútuament satisfactori i extàticament explícit.
